Recommending the correct eyewear to provide comfort and protection from UV is all too often forgotten once the summer months are out of the way. It is, however, vital that Opticians remind patients that UV damage and the discomfort, and indeed danger, of glare are not just summer problems but issues that occur throughout the year.

Research commissioned by Transitions Optical has revealed a range of incidents that have resulted directly from winter glare with more than a quarter of those asked saying they had suffered injury or an accident because of it.

Almost a third (31%) have had a ‘very near miss’ with busy road traffic

More than one in five (22%) have walked into a stationary object causing injury

More than one in ten (11%) have missed obstacles on the floor

Nearly two thirds (65%) have ignored someone because they couldn’t see them

Transitions lenses are designed to offer the defence eyes need in all seasons, in the winter protecting against glare from wet surfaces, ice and snow. Protecting against UV damage is even more essential for those who spend a significant amount of time outdoors such as children, sports enthusiasts and those with outdoor occupations.

Reminding patients of the importance of protecting their vision throughout the year is of vital importance. Glasses4Less is proud to recommend and use Transitions lenses.

Research conducted October 2010 with 100 people via Survey Monkey on behalf of Transitions Optical.

Top Tip No.2 ~ If your glasses break and you suddenly get the urge to try and fix them with Superglue, STOP! It doesn’t work and makes fixing them properly more difficult. What you usually end up doing is getting the glue all over your lenses, which means that your lenses are now damaged as well as your frame. If a frame is beyond repair there may be a chance to put your lenses into a new frame, but if they are all covered in glue your Optician is probably going to tell you that its a bin job. Let a specialist take a look at it, you’ll be surprise whats fixable.

Cheers

UV and eye protection concerns everyone.

Our sight is precious, without good vision we can’t live comfortably and happily, without the benefit of glare protection life can be tiring and stressful. Transitions VI lenses provide healthy sight in every light.

Did you know?

That in the last 10 years, the earth has lost 12% of its ozone layer! This means that our skin and eyes are at a greater threat of damage from UVA and UVB rays than ever before.

For every percent of ozone lost, scientists register a corresponding increase in cancer of 4% and cataracts of 0.8%. (source: World Health Organisation)

People just aren’t aware of the harmful effects that UV can have on their eyes. While prolonged or excessive sun bathing is associated with skin cancer it is not often linked to ocular lesions which is why the public need to be made aware of these facts. It’s not just associated with hot sunny days and foreign holidays in warmer climates, even in the UK people can be exposed to UV rays, even on cloudy days!

The very latest Transitions VI lenses react quickly to the changing light conditions and protect eyes from the damaging effects of Ultra Violet rays, just like sunblock protects your skin. Transitions lenses help preserve eye health as they block 100% of harmful UV rays
